"Laurel Wilt: A new disease threatening redbay and related eastern trees"

"Laurel Wilt: A new disease threatening redbay and related eastern trees", a lecture by Bud Mayfield, Ph.D., Forest Entomologist, Florida DACS Division of Forestry. The lecture will be held in the auditorium of the UF/IFAS Leon County Extension Office located at 615 Paul Russell Road, Tallahassee, Florida. Mortality of red bay trees (Persea borbonia) in coastal locations in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida is spreading rapidly, resulting in the death of nearly all red bays and sassafras trees in the infected areas. The cause of the disease is a fungus (Ophiostoma sp.) vectored by an Asian ambrosia beetle (Xyleborus glabratus). Both the beetle and fungus are recent introductions into the United States. There is currently no known method to halt the spread of this disease. The event will be free and open to the public unless CEU’s are obtained. Cost for CEU’s is $20.00. Make checks payable to Leon County Extension Horticulture Fund.
