ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES IN FOREST MEDICINAL PLANTS AND MUSHROOMS
This workshop aims to introduce farmers and woodland owners to forest medicinal plants and mushrooms that can be easily cultivated or grown as understory crops. Producers and researchers with years of experience in production, product development, marketing, and herbal medicine practice will share their knowledge on cropping systems, species selection (including best sellers), cultivation practices, harvesting, drying and preparation, value-added products, and marketing of forest medicinal plants and mushrooms. A panel of experienced growers will answer “all you wanted to know about medicinal plants cultivation and forest farming but did not know who to ask”. The workshop will conclude on Saturday with a guided walk through the woods at nearby Oak Mountain State Park. The ethnobotanists and herbal practitioners leading the walk will explain how to identify medicinal plants in their natural ecosystems and discuss their medicinal properties and usage. Stay in the afternoon for a workshop on organic certification, focusing on requirements for certified organic production and the process of becoming certified.
