Extension Forester receives SAF Technology Transfer Award
James E. Johnson, CF
Among his extensive accomplishments is the Virginia Forest Landowner Distance Education program, which incorporates well-documented, best management practices into engaging Web-based education programs. It also provides opportunities for face-to-face meetings and arranges partnerships with “landowner mentors” for those who are new to forestland ownership and management. He also has been instrumental in developing several program partnerships with the Virginia Department of Forestry and the Virginia Chapter of The Nature Conservancy to serve more forest landowners through education, technical assistance, and financial assistance programs.
An SAF member since 1976, Johnson has served as chair of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations Extension Working Party since 1994, and his knowledge and expertise has set the benchmark for forestry technology transfer programs around the world.
Technology Transfer Award recognizes outstanding achievement in technology transfer, implementation, and extension by a Society of American Foresters member as evidenced in the recipient’s career or involvement in SAF working group and science activities. Enhancing the practice of forestry that is based on good science is a foundation principle of SAF. Presented annually, the award includes a $1,000 cash honorarium.
