ASSISTANT PROFESSOR of FOREST ECOLOGY

The University of Montana, Department of Forest Management seeks a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Forest Ecology to become a regional and national authority on the ecological foundations of sustainable forest management in the Inland West. The position will start as early as fall 2009.

The individual will be expected to: teach applied and basic forest ecology at the graduate and undergraduate level; develop a nationally recognized and externally-funded research program that addresses key issues in the ecology and management of forest ecosystems in the Interior West; advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; fulfill roles of service to the university and profession.
A Ph.D. in forest ecology, forestry, or closely related natural resources field is required. Candidates must have depth of knowledge in forest dynamics, plant community ecology, disturbance ecology, and field botany.
The successful candidate should have experience or interest in the ecology of forests and grasslands of the Inland West, and should exhibit the demonstrated ability to: develop and manage a vigorous field-oriented research program in applied forest ecology (including record of publication and professional presentation); teach successfully at the university level, preferably incorporating field-based instruction; and communicate effectively with foresters and natural resource professionals, private landowners, fellow scientists and the general public.

Preferred qualifications include practical forestry or ecology-related work experience, and formal coursework or experience in plant physiology, forest ecosystem ecology, fire ecology, and/or forest soils.
