Slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) is one of themost important species in the southern pine region. It is favored bymany forest managers because of its fast growth and excellent utilityfor pulp, lumber, poles and even gum naval stores. In those areas whereslash pine is concentrated, thousands of jobs and multimillion dollarindustries depend on this species.

Today, 20 years after the original symposium, Slash pine remains animportant species. Slash pine research and technology development sincehas focused on genetics, biotechnology, precision management, intensivemanagement, economics, insect and disease resistance and much more.Forest managers and landowners alike have questions about Slash pinemanagement, researchers, scientists and other practitioners have many ofthe answers. This symposium will provide the opportunity to bringresearch and new technologies in touch with foresters andlandowners.

In addition, an optional full-day field trip to Yulee, Florida andRayonier Corporation timberlands will provide participants with anopportunity to look at cutting edge research and field trials invegetation management, spacing, fertilization, loblolly comparisons,and other cultural practices.


You are invited to attend the 2002 Florida-Georgia SAF SpringSymposium to be held April 23-25, 2002 at the Holiday Inn on JekyllIsland off the Georgia coast.

Located midway between Savannah, GA and Jacksonville, FL, JekyllIsland has miles of beautiful, white sand beaches, 63 holes ofchampionships golf, an indoor/outdoor tennis complex, water fun park,fishing pier, marina, and nature center.

Lodging: A block of rooms has been reserved at the HolidayInn. Call the hotel directly at 912-635-3311 to reserve your room. Besure to ask for "Slash Pine Symposium" to get the special $65 rate. Theroom block will be released on March 22 and higher rates may apply afterthat.

Registration Fee: The conference registration fee includesrefreshment breaks, lunch, reception, and materials. Register by April 9to receive the early fee of $145. The fee for the field trip is $30(transportation will be provided).

Continuing Education Credits for Symposium:

  • 12 Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) hours in Category 1
  • 12 Continuing Logger Education contact hours in SustainableForestry
  • 12 continuingeducation hours approved by the Georgia Real Estate AppraisersBoard. The Real Estate Commission accepts them.
