Industrial forest ownership in the US has seen a dramatic shift. Over the last 25 years, most of the publicly held forest products companies in the U.S. have either sold all, or most of their forestlands, or separated ownership of their forest assets from their manufacturing activities.

BLACKSBURG, June 8, 2007 - Mila Alvarez, a professor in Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and working at the university's National Capital Region campus, has authored a comprehensive report for the Society of American Foresters (SAF) that details everything there is to know about American forests.

The Virginia Tech College of Natural Resources announced that its Department of Forestry as changed its name to the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation <http://www.forestry.vt.edu/> (http://www.forestry.vt.edu/) to better reflect the breadth and depth of the many natural resource programs offered.

BLACKSBURG, Va., April 24, 2006 - A new partnership in the state, the Master Naturalist Program, is a grass-roots effort to train a cadre of volunteers who will work in their local communities to improve the environment. Virginia is basing the program on a model that is proving highly successful in other states and that is similar to the Master Gardener Program.

The Woods and Wildlife Conference for owners of large and small tracts of land will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2008 in Roanoke for individuals, families, managers and interested persons to learn about woods, wildlife and other natural resources. The day will provide participants with multiple links to information, new ideas to implement, and a better understanding of their natural resources.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 28, 2005 - Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns today announced a proposal to dedicate $800 million in hurricane recovery funds for agricultural and timber producers, rural low-income housing assistance, restoration of natural resources and national forests, commodity food assistance programs, and rebuilding of USDA facilities.

SUMMARY: The Forest Service is inviting all interested members of the public to provide input into the development of the USDA Forest Service Open Space Conservation Strategy and Implementation Plan, which will help shape the agency&#8217;s strategic role in a national effort to conserve open space. The Forest Service is interested in addressing the effects of the loss of open space on private forests; on the National Forests and Grasslands and surrounding landscape; and on forests in cities, suburbs, and towns. Input for the Strategy and Implementation Plan should focus on programs, research, partnerships, and/or policyrecommendations that could be developed to conserve open space. See SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION section for more background on the loss of open space and the Strategy and Implementation Plan.
