New Course: Natural Resources Opportunities for Landowners
In partnership with University of Georgia and Southern Regional Extension Forestry, Clemson University has developed a course on natural resource opportunities for landowners. The goal of this 5-week long course is to make non-industrial private forest landowners aware of the options available for managing their lands.
A regional team of Extension Foresters including Dr. Ben Jackson University of Georgia and Dr. Greg Yarrow and Dr. Tamara Cushing of Clemson University, designed the Natural Resources Opportunities for Landowners course, a 5-week online course starting early October 2012. The goal of this course is to provide non-industrial private forest landowners an awareness of options available for managing their lands. This course is a primer on natural resources and land management options. The first session provides basics of natural resource conservation and management, including definitions and examples, so that participants gain a “working vocabulary.” The second session, “Natural Resource Enterprise Considerations,” will give an overview of ways to make money off land in addition to timber production. Subsequent seminars address the basics of tree farming and wildlife management. The final seminar focuses on ways to increase recreational opportunities and land stewardship. Within these sessions, we will also include information about how climate change will affect land management and the latest information on how to adapt management strategies to mitigate climate change effects. This course is also a lead-in to three separate courses that will be taught in the spring of 2013: “Master Tree Farmer,” “Master Wildlifer,” and “Natural Resource Enterprises.”
The course began October 11, 2012 and will run every Thursday through November 8, 2012. Course sessions will be recorded for future viewing, and an additional offering of the course will be available in spring 2013.
