Catastrophic wildfires in the United States are not simply a “western problem”. The southeastern US experiences 40% of the nation’s large wildfires, burning approximately 1 million acres a year. These fires threaten and destroy lives and property and cost millions of dollars. Alternatively, the south actively utilizes prescribed fire to achieve forest and agricultural management objectives, burning nearly 10 million acres a year. Prescribed fire diminishes wildfire occurrence, reduces woody competition in forest management, and enhances ecosystems. Addressing the region’s wildfire concerns and promoting the benefits of prescribed fire can be achieved through education and peer-to-peer learning. Case studies demonstrate how different communities or organizations have unique approaches to wildland fire challenges.

The Cohesive Fire Strategy, US Forest Service, and Southern Regional Extension Forestry have highlighted southeastern wildland fire accomplishments by developing over 50 case studies. The stories demonstrate how the southeast is improving its “fire resiliency” through technology, education and outreach, forest management, collaboration, and more.
