SREF Staff Travel to Regional and National Meetings to Strengthen Partnerships

In August, 2017, SREF staff traveled to two important meetings: the Annual Regional Program Leadership Network meeting in Fort Worth, Texas and a National Forest Tax Experts summit in Washington, DC. Both meetings provided an excellent opportunity for SREF to engage with its partners ,and to opened up possibilities for new collaborations.

The Annual Regional Program Leadership Network

Regional Forester Dr. Bill Hubbard, Extension Agent Leslie Boby and Marketing and Graphic Design Director Laura Costa participated in the regional Program Leadership Network (PLN) meeting in Fort Worth, Texas during the last week of August. The trio spent their time providing presentations on SREF’s mission and products to Extension Middle Managers, ANR Program Leaders, and Extension Directors. These three groups offered advice and input on how to gain better access to Extension agents and have a greater impact at the county and district level of Extension.

Extension leadership at each of SREF’s partner institutions is regularly present at the annual Program Leadership Network meeting, so the event remains a crucial means for SREF staff to maintain communication with its stakeholder institutions. This year, our partners indicated that SREF should be focusing on the branding of regional Extension products, utilizing our needs assessment results to increase our effectiveness and reach, and ensuring our websites and products are well represented on state Extension sites. SREF staff are extremely grateful for the resources and sponsorship of all of these state partners. 2017 marks the 25th year that Bill Hubbard has been attending and presenting.

Below is an assortment of publications that SREF staff shared at the PLN meeting to show its recent accomplishments:

National Forest Taxation Experts Meeting in DC

Regional Forester Dr. Bill Hubbard also participated in a renewed effort to bring together national forest taxation experts to discuss current research and Extension efforts and opportunities for collaboration. In all, about 20 experts participated either in person or online at Forest Service headquarters in Washington, DC. Meeting goals included hearing from stakeholders, reconnecting/connecting with colleagues in forest taxation, learning about each other's tax-related work, and considering possible partnerships and collaboration. The team heard from representatives of the American Forest Foundation, the National Woodland Owners Association and the Association of Consulting Foresters. Each representative encouraged this renewed effort and were supportive of continued research and Extension in this area. The team agreed that developing a joint research/Extension logic model would be an effective use of their time and the draft results are being circulated for edit and review. Anyone interested in this effort is encouraged to reach out to Dr. Greg Frey (gregoryefrey@fs.fed.us), Dr. Linda Wang (lwang@fs.fed.us), or Dr. Bill Hubbard (whubbard@sref.info) for more information.
