New Urban Forestry Release: Tree Selection & Placement Video Series

There are several considerations to be made when planting a tree, including available space, preparing the soil properly, species selection, and environmental and local site conditions. To maximize energy conservation, the ultimate goal is to have a long-lived tree. In these videos, Liza Holmes, Research Technician at the Bartlett Tree Research Lab, instructs the viewer on evaluating the soil, preparing the root ball, planting depth, protecting trees during construction, and choosing the right location based on available space and mature tree size, all with the ultimate goal of establishing healthy long-lived urban trees.

The last part of a five-part, urban forestry and energy conservation video series was recently released. Developed by Virginia Tech,  Virginia Cooperative Extension, and the Southern Regional Extension Forestry, these six videos explain how to assess and prepare a site, properly prepare and plant a tree, and avoid soil and root disturbance during construction so maximum energy conservation can be achieved. The entire series is useful to educate community leaders and the public about the benefits of urban trees and forests and provide management recommendations for optimal growth. The videos complement educational programming in urban forestry and are a useful tool for visualizing specific management techniques. Watch these videos and more at the Trees for Energy Conservation YouTube channel.
