This course will provide natural resource management professionals with introductory knowledge on five basic heuristic processes that have been suggested for use in forest planning processes. The course will describe the basic implementation of each when applied to typical harvest scheduling problems that have an economic objective (e.g., maximization of net present value) and may have wood flow or harvest timing and placement (adjacency) constraints. While actual implementation of the heuristic processes will require computer programming skills, this course does not require participants to use a computer programming language. The content of the course is built around graphical examples (flow charts and others) that are meant to describe in general how each process works. Advantages and disadvantages of each heuristic process will be outlined, and enhancements to their basic implementation (to derive higher quality plans) will be discussed.  This leisurely course will cover the following:

1) An introduction and background on the use of heuristics in forest planning
2) An introduction to Monte Carlo simulation, simulated annealing, threshold accepting,
    tabu search and genetic algorithms.
2) A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each heuristic process.
