New MSU Extension Publication: Using Simulators for Logger Training and Timber Transportation
Mississippi State University (MSU) Extension has published a new Extension publication detailing how simple video game-style simulators can be used for logger training. Logging requires using expensive equipment that requires extensive training, however, simple video game-style simulators offer opportunities for learning about logging and some basic training. Lear. Another publication by MSU Extension details the costs associated with transporting timber from the stump to the mill, and how log truck drivers are paid. The publication titled “How Do Log Truck Drivers Receive Payment?” describes the main methods used for calculating the amount due to log truck drivers including payments by the load, per ton mile, as a percentage of revenue, per ton or board foot, salary, and more. Learning how these costs are calculated helps forest landowners and forestry professionals better understand the factors that impact the amount of remuneration received. To learn more about simulator logger training, click here. To access the publication on timber transportation, click here.

New NRCS Interactive Soil Mapping Site Provides Info at Statewide Scale
The California Soil Resource Lab at the University of California, Davis, and the University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC-ANR) in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA NRCS) recently developed an interactive soil mapping website. This interactive map allows the exploration of a variety of soil properties throughout the continental United States. The data shown were obtained by aggregating current USDA-NCSS Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) data back-filled with State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) where SSURGO is not available at the necessary detail level. This data aggregation technique results in maps that may not match the original data at any given point, but it is intended to depict regional trends in soil properties at the statewide scale. To access the soil mapping site, click here.

Google’s Canopy Tool Covers Hundreds of Cities
Google’s free online “Tree Canopy tool” maps urban tree cover and can be used for nearly 350 cities worldwide, up from only 14 in previous years. The tool aims to help cities “understand their current tree coverage and better plan urban forestry initiatives,” according to Google’s blog post. The Tree Canopy is part of a suite of tools called “Environmental Insights Explorer,” which also includes tools for estimating the solar energy potential of buildings and greenhouse gas estimates in an area. Early users of the tools have found it useful for connecting community members to easily accessible and understandable data. The Chicago Department of Public Health has used it to identify areas where more trees are needed for residents and to focus outreach efforts. The company plans to expand the tool to thousands of cities this year. To learn more about the tool, click here.
New Wood Sourcing Tool Verifies Sustainability of Timber Production and Harvest
The American Wood Council (AWC) has created the first online “Wood Sourcing Tool” that verifies where wood was sourced from based on a product’s mill grade stamp or region. The tool can provide confirmation that the timber was sustainably produced and harvested. The tool classifies the source of the wood product in one of three categories: non-controversial, responsible, and certified. Sustainable forestry refers to timber production without net annual change in forest cover. The web-based tool can be accessed here

Web-based Climate Toolbox Connects Users to Agricultural Applications

The Climate Toolbox website is a collection of web tools for visualizing past and projected climate and hydrology of the contiguous United States. There are four application pages that cover topics related to agriculture, climate, fire, and water. On the agriculture page, there are links to 18 tools that include a Climate Mapper, a Future Cold Hardiness tool, and Future Crop Suitability. These tools can help producers plan for future climatic conditions at their locations, zones, and future growing conditions for a location. The Climate page has different tools to provide data on climate change such as Data Download, Future Boxplot, and Future Climate Analogs. The Fire page has 15 tools including Future Vegetation and Future Climate Dashboard. The Water page tools include Historical Water Watcher and Future Climate Dashboard. In addition to looking at longer-term trends, the Climate Toolbox also provides information on sub-seasonal forecasts, historical drought timelines, and graphs of daily weather and forecasts for a location. The climate toolbox can be accessed here.

Funding Opportunities
Connecting People to Forests Request for MAP 2023 Proposals
The National Forest Foundation (NFF) is soliciting proposals from nonprofit organizations, tribal governments and organizations, and universities seeking funds for projects that directly benefit America’s National Forests and Grasslands under its Matching Awards Program (MAP). MAP pairs federal funds 1:1 cash provided through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) with non-federal dollars raised by award recipients, multiplying the resources available to benefit the National Forest System. Nonfederal cash funds need to be directly received by the applicant organization. In-kind contributions are ineligible for use as a match. Award recipients must expend a match for the completion of the same project within the NFF grant performance period. An informational webinar was held on April 25. Application Deadline is June 7, 2023, at 11:59 pm MDT. To learn more about NFF MAP funding, click here.

NSF RFP to Catalyze Innovative & Inclusive Wildland Fire Science
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued a request for proposals (RFP) specifically for planning proposals from project participants such as Tribal Nation and Tribal College and University (TCU) representatives, local community members, Indigenous researchers, and/or cultural knowledge holders focused on catalyzing innovative and inclusive wildland fire science through collaboration amongst diverse stakeholders and rights holders. A planning proposal is a type of proposal used to support initial conceptualization, planning, and collaboration activities that aim to formulate new and sound plans for large-scale projects in current and emerging research areas for future submission to an NSF program. The 2021 Wildfire and the Biosphere Innovation Lab generated creative strategies and new research collaborations aimed at improving understanding of different types and impacts of wildland fires over time, from the local to the global scale as well as five emergent themes. These themes are to assess the mechanisms underlying a variety of Earth's system feedbacks involving fire, to study fire across temporal and spatial scales, to improve the representation of fire in modeling and forecasting, to incorporate social dimensions into wildland fire science research, and to develop innovative and convergent education to generate the researchers and practitioners of the future. To learn more about the planning proposal or submission procedure, click here.
