USFS Releases 2022 Eastern Regional Report on Forest Health

The United States Forest Service (USFS) recently released its Eastern Region’s forest health monitoring program’s 2022 eastern regional report. With the assistance of state forestry cooperative partners, the USFS annually surveys forested areas of the South for forest health conditions. Surveys are conducted from aircrafts to enable efficient coverage effectively and economically. The Forest Health Monitoring programs in regions 8 and 9 have partnered with various state cooperators and the USDA Climate Hub to document and highlight areas affected by coastal ghost forests. In addition, the team has developed a story map to help inform the public. To read more about the regional forest health report and to access the story map, click here.

AHEC Hires Dovetail Partners to Address EU’s Deforestation Regulation

The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) is partnering with Dovetail Partners, Inc. to develop independent jurisdictional risk assessments of hardwood production in 33 states. The assessments are a response to the European Union's new deforestation regulations, which require due diligence statements addressing deforestation risk and providing geolocation of all lands where relevant commodities were produced. Minneapolis-based Dovetail Partners – a non-profit corporation specializing in environmental management – will complete the jurisdictional risk based on the new regulations created by the Sustainable Hardwood Coalition (SHC). Dovetail will assess the risk of illegal hardwood production in each of the 33 US states and produce assessments that are endorsed by the SHC. Learn more about the regulation and risk assessments here.

Urban Wood Drying Workshop

North Carolina State University (NCSU) Wood Products Extension and the Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo have partnered to conduct a series of urban wood drying workshops as part of a Calfire Community and Urban Forestry grant. Proper drying is key to processing freshly milled boards and slabs into valuable, high-quality, marketable products. This workshop will provide participants with the knowledge to better control drying in urban wood operations, the resources to develop a strategy, and recommendations for implementation of the best practices. The workshop will be held in Paso Robles, CA from March 11-13. Learn more about the workshop here

Declining Bird Populations Highlighted in Interactive National Newspaper Article

A journalist from the Washington Post interviewed a team of researchers from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to discuss the decline of North America’s bird population. The adult breeding population has declined by 3 billion breeding adults – or 30% of the adult breeding population – over the past 50 years. Over the past decade, a decline in backyard bird populations during breeding season, such as white-throated sparrows, American crows, and American goldfinches has been detected through the database of bird observations managed by Cornell Lab. This app or tool,  called eBird, allows individuals to document their sightings of birds in any location and at any time and assists in the identification of the birds. To learn more about declining populations of birds, the eBird tool, and more, read the full article here.

Predictor of Avian Communities Tool (PACT) Available on Updated Website

The Predictor of Avian Communities Tool (PACT), created with funding from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, along with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst has recently been updated. PACT is a tool that connects forest management to bird communities for any given geographical location in temperate forests of the eastern US and Canada. Forest management affects bird populations and provides landowners with opportunities to contribute to bird conservation. In the eastern US, there is a lack of age diversity in forests, which affects bird populations. For example, forests with more closed canopies are likelier to include bird species such as wood thrush and scarlet tanagers, while forests treated with clearcuts or shelterwoods are populated by shrubland birds like chestnut-sided warblers and indigo buntings. A mixture of habitats is beneficial to all birds and this tool allows users to explore how treatments to open the canopy or change the basal area, will affect the two groups of birds over time. To access the tool, click here.

Input Requested from Extension Personnel to Identify Top Priorities of Rural Stakeholders

The Rural Population Research Network is leading an effort to identify the priority issues that affect population change in rural areas, with help from a diverse group of rural stakeholders. They are inviting Extension colleagues working with rural people and places to participate in a one-hour listening session on challenges and opportunities related to population change in one of the four following areas: agriculture and food systems, community and economic development, environmental and natural resources, and health, healthcare, and disability services. Insights from this listening Session will be used to inform future research on these topics. Findings from the sessions will be used to produce a public report, presentations, and publications identifying topics of interest and priorities for future applied research. Findings will also help guide the work of the network and be shared with stakeholders including participants, state and federal agencies, and philanthropic organizations. Registration can be found here.

ACES 2024 Conference Call for Proposals

A Community on Ecosystem Services (ACES) is calling for proposals for its 2024 annual conference in Austin, TX December 9-12. The ACES 2024 central theme is “Investing in Community Resilience and Equity,” and the goal is to engage leaders in government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academia, Native American tribes, and the private sector to advance the use of ecosystem services science and practice in resource management and other societal decisions. They invite those actively working in ecosystem services to propose a session on a timely topic that would be beneficial and of keen interest to the ecosystem services community. Topics include investing, equity, or resilience in ecosystem services. The proposal submission deadline is April 5. Learn more by viewing the full call for proposals here.

American Wood Council Updates Wood Sourcing Tool

The American Wood Council has recently updated its wood sourcing tool site. This is the first online tool to provide wood sourcing data based on a product’s mill grade stamp or region. The ASTM D7612-21 standard offers an objective framework for identifying wood product sources. When assessing the sustainability of forests where wood comes from, there are three categories that describe the source of a wood product: non-controversial, responsible, and certified. Each category provides different assurances of the practices that take place in the forests where the wood is grown and harvested. The tool also features information on what each source means as well as frequently asked questions about sustainable forestry, forestry assurances, and carbon and climate change. The tool is free and available online here.
