USDA Celebrates 10 Years of Climate Hubs

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the founding of the USDA Climate Hubs. The mission of the Climate Hubs is to develop and deliver science-based, region-specific information and technologies to agricultural and forestry producers. The hubs are a collaboration across multiple USDA agencies including the Agricultural Research Service, Forest Service, and Natural Resources Conservation Service. These climate hubs share information with agricultural and natural resource managers to enable climate-informed decision-making and provide access to assistance to implement those decisions. Originally, 10 regional locations were established across the United States, and today more than 120 climate researchers and communicators work across USDA to share important climate information. Learn more about climate hubs and their impact here.

Biden-Harris Administration Makes Record Private Land Conservation Investment

Recently, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that it has made record investments in private land conservation in fiscal year 2023 due to the resources made available by the Inflation Reduction Act. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has supported more than 45,000 conservation contracts, which is more than any year in the 89-year history of USDA’s Natural Resource Conservation Services (NRCS), totaling more than $2.8 Billion in financial assistance to producers. The last year showed unprecedented demand for conservation from farmers and ranchers, with applications outpacing available funding. A total of $19.5 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act is available over several years for climate-smart agriculture and forestry mitigation activities, including through NRCS conservation programs. In fiscal year 2024, the second year of implementation, NRCS is making over $3 billion available from the Inflation Reduction Act in addition to the $2 billion in Farm Bill funding. To learn more about the record investments and the programs being funded, click here.

USDA Launches New Working Lands Climate Corps

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced the launch of the new Working Lands Climate Corps to train the next generation of conservation and climate leaders. The Working Lands Climate Corps is part of the American Climate Corps, a workforce training and service initiative that is working to ensure more young people have access to the skills-based training needed for good-paying careers in the clean energy and climate resilience economy. In its first cohort, the aim is to create service opportunities for more than 100 young people. The USDA’s Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) is working in partnership with AmeriCorps, The Corps Network, and the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD). A webinar will be held on February 20 to provide additional information to organizations interested in applying. To learn more about the new Working Lands Climate Corps, click here.

Guide to Herbicide Application Windows During a Southern Pine Rotation to Improve Productivity

Pine stands play an important economic role across the southeastern US and are responsible for bringing in tens of billions of dollars every year through timber and pulpwood products. The use of herbicides is one way to increase productivity by managing competition from herbaceous species and promoting desired species. But what specific herbicide should be used, when should they be used, and how do you use herbicides properly for the most effective outcome in pine stands? In this webinar, Dr. David Clabo is going to answer all this and more as he covers herbicide use in pine stands from site preparation through midrotation. CEU credits available. Register here

PennState Extension Ukraine Series: Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) in Ukraine

Attendees will learn what humanitarian demining is, how it is conducted, and the efforts currently underway in Ukraine. The fighting in Ukraine has left behind hundreds of thousands of anti-personnel mines, anti-vehicle mines, and unexploded or abandoned munitions that did not explode on impact. A third of the country is contaminated. These dangerous remnants of war not only threaten the lives of civilians but also obstruct humanitarian efforts, hamper reconstruction, and prevent resource managers from accessing their fields and forests. Participants will hear demining experts from the HALO Trust and Fondation Suisse de Déminage (FSD). Learn more and register here

This is the only program dedicated to the urban forest program in the federal government. The program works in partnership with State and local forestry agencies, non-profit and tribal organizations, and institutions of higher education to restore, sustain, and manage more than 140 million acres of urban and community forest lands for the benefit of communities across the United States. The Forest Service is seeking proposals to address the National Ten Year Urban and Community Forestry Action Plan (2016-2026) Goals 4 and 5. Goal 4 is to increase the biodiversity, health, and resilience of trees in urban and community forests. Goal 5 is to support the use of more locally grown, regionally adapted, insect and pest-resistant, and diverse native or sire-appropriate species. Proposals are to be received by 5:00 pm Eastern Time on February 29, 2024. The Action Plan can be accessed here. The full notice of funding opportunity and application can be found here.
