EPA Releases new Particulate Matter 2.5 Air Quality Standards Which May Create Challenges for Prescribed Burning

In a recent newsletter edition of the Driptorch Digest, they summarized the recent updates to the EPA's National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) have been released. The new standards for annual PM2.5 set a lower threshold of 9 micrograms per cubic meter, down from the previous standard of 12. There are many questions still to be answered, but this is expected to create new challenges to implementing prescribed fire in the region like making fewer burn days available. However, the EPA has been working closely with the prescribed fire community and has committed to continuing that work. The Driptorch Digest will continue to share any upcoming new tools and resources that the EPA plans to develop for prescribed burners, guidance on the use of the EPA's exceptional events process for prescribed fire, and best practices for ensuring that your area stays within attainment as the new standards are implemented. In the meantime, burners should continue to follow their state's Smoke Management Plan and/or basic smoke management practices. A factsheet on the EPA’s implementation of this rule can be found here.

UVA Sawmilling Repurposes Fallen Urban Trees

University of Virginia (UVA) Sawmilling is putting fallen urban trees to good use by processing them into milled wood, lumber, and slabs. The focus of their group is research, building, materials and living trees. endeavor began in 2019 when the co-founder Andrew Spears, who was then a Master of Landscape Architecture student, attended a guest lecture on wood identification at UVA. The discussion eventually led to the unused logs piled on a nearby hill, inspiring Spears to apply for the funding needed to construct a wood kiln for milling. The group engages students in hands-on fabrication workshops, hosts sawmilling demonstrations for local high schools, assists with community urban wood reclamation and utilization, as well as creating a network for urban wood use. Future plans include piloting the use of an urban wood tracking software, and building a developing a tree nursery. Today, the processed materials serve UVA students and community by providing wood for material research, student projects, and enhancing campus spaces. By providing access to high-quality lumber, UVA Sawmilling aims to eliminate the financial barriers preventing students' projects and research. Slabs can be purchased on their website. PBA Offers Landowners Resources to Conduct Prescribed Burns

The Southwest Georgia Prescribed Burn Association (PBA) unites landowners and various organizations with the common goal of sharing knowledge, resources, and equipment to conduct prescribed fires. Through collaborative efforts, members of this association gain access to PBA’s extensive network, workshops, and specialized equipment necessary for controlled burns. Due to centuries of fire suppression, much of Georgia’s forests have become overgrown. Given that 93% of Georgia’s land is privately owned, the active involvement of these landowners is crucial to being able to burn the acreage needed to keep Georgia’s land healthy. PBA plays a vital role in addressing this challenge, ensuring the health and vitality of Georgia's forests for the present as well as future generations. To learn more about becoming a PBA member and the services this association can offer, click here.

Forestry Workforce Inclusion Council Launches New Website to Share Resources

The Inclusion Council was created in 2022 by the U.S. Endowment for Forests and Communities to foster inclusive workplaces, empower sustainable practices, and drive an equitable future in the forests and wood products sector. Their goal is to transform the forestry landscape by championing diversity, sustainability, and collaboration. Their first steps are to develop and complete a National Action Plan for accomplishing this transformation by conducting research and launching a survey to better understand workforce challenges and other barriers within the sector. They will also be hosting a series of Learning Labs to share best practices from forestry industry leaders and building a Community of Practice for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) advocates, practitioners and champions to strengthen the sector workforce. New Web Application Tracks Carbon Stored in Harvested Wood Products

The Securing Northeast Forest Carbon Program recently released a web application that tracks the carbon stored in harvested wood products in the US Northeast. The goal of this app is to provide foresters with an estimate of the longevity of their processed wood products. This app requires four pieces of information: forest type, wood product type, volume units, and volume harvested. Data is shown through the use of graphs and half-life of products in use, defined as the time required for a product to be reduced to half of its initial value. To access the app, click here. USDA Announces 2024 National Urban and Community Forestry Challenge Cost Share Grant Program

The United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USDA FS) recently released a notice of funding opportunity under the Urban and Community Forestry Program (U&CF). This is the only program dedicated to the urban forest program in the federal government. The program works in partnership with State and local forestry agencies, non-profit and tribal organizations, and institutions of higher education to restore, sustain, and manage more than 140 million acres of urban and community forest lands for the benefit of communities across the United States. The Forest Service is seeking proposals to address the National Ten Year Urban and Community Forestry Action Plan (2016-2026) Goals 4 and 5. Goal 4 is to increase the biodiversity, health, and resilience of trees in urban and community forests. Goal 5 is to support the use of more locally grown, regionally adapted, insect and pest-resistant, and diverse native or sire-appropriate species. Proposals are to be received by 5:00 pm Eastern Time on March 21, 2024. The Action Plan can be accessed here. The full notice of funding opportunity and application can be found here.
