UF Revamps Collaborative Floridan Aquifer Project to Promote Economic Sustainability of Agriculture & Silviculture in N. FL & S. GA

The University of Florida (UF) Water Institute has announced the launch of the recently updated Floridan Aquifer Collaborative Engagement for Sustainability (FACETS) project webpage. FACETS aims to develop new knowledge needed to explore the relationships between regional agricultural economies and environmental quality, understand changes needed to achieve agricultural water security and environmental protection; and to develop tools, incentives, and educational programs for improved decision making. An integral part of the project was the Participatory Modeling Process, created for diverse stakeholders to work collaboratively and share perspectives, identify knowledge gaps, and improve the accuracy, credibility, and utility of project results. The FACETS webpage includes project goals, key findings, and a collection of publications and resources developed through the project. Resources for the Future’s 50-Year Projection of Climate Risk Hotspots

A new paper by Resources for the Future (RFF) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) identifies the Southeastern region as future climate risk hotspots due to growing populations and high social vulnerability. Using 50-year projections of natural hazards and population changes and socioeconomic vulnerability data, the researchers found that by 2070, risks from water shortages, heat stress, and wildfires will intensify, driven by climate change and population growth. Notably, populous and vulnerable areas will face significant risk from wildfire, while water shortages and heat stress will disproportionately impact vulnerable communities. Development of Two Southern Rx Fire Decision Tools Awarded Funding by NASA Earth Action Wildland Fire Program

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has selected 10 new projects from the NASA Earth Action Wildland Fire Program Solicitation (Request for Proposals), intended to solicit proposals for innovative projects that will support decisions related to wildland fire management. Two projects in the southern region were selected. TO ne proposal will focus on developing “Rx Burn: a Decision Support System for Improved Deployment of Prescribed Fire Resources” for the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Region 8 (which includes the 13 states of the southern region). The following capabilities are needed in Rx Burn to fill major decision gaps: 3 to 14 days outlooks for prescribed burn opportunities, near-real-time monitoring of land surface conditions, and an augmented 1-2 day forecast for planned prescribed burn activities. One of the other selected projects that focuses on states in the South is “A Decision Support System for Automated Precise Prescribed Fire Mapping in the Everglades Headwaters.”  This project involves creation of a decision support system with a mapping system that will provide data to support proactive management strategies, enable beneficial fires, and modernize tools for informed decision-making. Nominations Now Open for the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals Awards Program

The Association of Natural Resource Extension Profession (ANREP) Awards Program is now accepting nominations for several awards to honor the outstanding achievements of members and partners within natural resources extension. Eligible nominees must be active ANREP members in good standing, self-nominations are welcome. The two award categories are the Outstanding Educational Materials Awards, recognizing educational resources in nine categories such as publications, webinars, videos, etc., and the Achievement Awards, recognizing exceptional leadership and program excellence. Yale Forestry Forum’s Upcoming Forest History Webinar Series

The Yale Forestry Forum, co-hosted by the Forest School at the Yale School of the Environment and the Forest History Society, has announced its free Spring 2025 speaker series, “A History of People, Forests, and Forestry.” During this expert lead series, speakers will survey various forest regions and represent different cultural histories from across the globe. Attendees will gain an understanding of the origins of pre-industrial forest practices worldwide, compare differences and similarities among regional forest histories, and connect people to place and practice through pre-industrial forestry. Continuing education units (CEU) will be offered to foresters in attendance. SAF Award Nominations Now Open

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is now accepting nominations for its 15 national awards, and Fellow and Presidential Field Forester awards. These awards celebrate and honors scientists, researchers, educators, innovators, leaders, communicators, field foresters, employers, local SAF units, and others that have made significant impact on forestry in the United States and internationally. Award categories include forest science and technology, communications, leadership, professional development, presidential field forester, and outstanding SAF student chapter awards. JPMorgan Chase Releases a Short Video About Heirs’ Property

JPMorgan Chase, a financial services firm, has released a short video on their website explaining what heirs’ property is and how they can help families affected by heirs’ property disputes. Heirs’ property refers to property that passes from generation to generation without a legally designated owner, often resulting in partial ownership by family members. This division of ownership can cause a family to lose the property should even one owner decide to sell their portion, possibly resulting in a forced sale. This issues disproportionally affects Black, Hispanic, and Latino Americans and other underserved communities. Proposed solutions include increasing education opportunities, estate planning services, legal clinics, policy reform, and administrative simplifications. IUFRO Small Scale Forestry and Extension Knowledge Exchange Joint Conference

The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) Small Scale Forestry Research Group and Extension and Knowledge Exchange (EKE) Working Party will have a joint conference in Everett, WA from September 8-10. Washington State University will be hosting this joint conference at the Marriott Delta Hotel. Conference presentations will be held on September 8th and 10th. The in-conference tour, included with the conference registration, will be on September 9th, which will visit a unique community-managed small-scale tree farm, a visit to Snoqualmie Falls, and a conference banquet at Ivar's Salmon House in downtown Seattle. USFS Community Wildfire Defense Grant for the Southern Region

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) had made $200 million available for the Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) South with the maximum award amount being $10 million. This opportunity seeks to assist at-risk Southern communities with planning and mitigating the risk created by wildfire. The CWDG helps communities in the wildland urban interface (WUI) implement the three goals of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy (Cohesive Strategy): restore and maintain landscapes, create fire adapted communities, and improve wildfire response. Climate Smart Communities Initiatives Community Resilience Grant

Climate Smart Communities Initiatives (CSCI) is currently accepting applications for grants to advance community-based climate resilience efforts. The applicants must be a community-based organization and a local, regional, or Tribal government entity. The funds can be used for a range of activities depending on the needs of the community, including climate vulnerability and risk analyses, planning processes, community engagement, project prioritization, and/or the implementation of projects. Each grant will cover a 12-month period, and include approximately $100,000 in funding as well as access to training opportunities, technical experts, and cohort support. Longleaf Landscape Stewardship Fund 2025 Request for Proposals

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation has announced the release of the 2025 request for proposals (RFP) under the Longleaf Landscape Stewardship Fund. This RFP will award approximately $31 million in funding to support on-the-ground projects that help accelerate longleaf pine restoration on private and public lands to support wildlife, sequester carbon, safeguard water quality, and increase forest resilience. US Endowment Announces RFP Beginning January 2025 for Round Two of its Impact Investing Program

The U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities will conduct a second round of its Impact Investing Program early next year. A request for proposals (RFP) will be released in January 2025 with up to $6.5 million available for projects that generate financial returns while enhancing forest health, supporting forest-reliant communities, and expanding sustainable forest markets. The program focuses on three primary areas: (1) working forests, (2) rural forest-reliant communities, and (3) industry processes and products. Round two seeks to deploy up to $6.5 million in funding to companies, funds, or projects that advance systemic, transformative and sustainable benefits for the health and vitality of our nation’s working forests and forest-reliant communities. Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant Program

The 2025 Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant Program provides approximately $2.5 million in grants to support projects that improve water quality, restore habitats, and engage communities in conservation efforts. The program prioritizes ecological restoration in wetlands, riparian areas, and urban habitats, green infrastructure, environmental outreach, and partnerships that involve underserved communities. Applicants must include five or more community partners and focus on enhancing natural resources while addressing environmental hazards. Proposals are due by January 30, 2025. DOE Solar with Wildlife and Ecosystem Benefits Funding Opportunity

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) announced the Solar with Wildlife and Ecosystem Benefits 2 (SolWEB2) funding opportunity, which will award up to $11 million for research and development, technical assistance, and stakeholder engagement activities that improve the compatibility of large-scale solar (LSS) facilities with wildlife and facilitate the dual use of land for agricultural and solar energy production. Rural Business Development Grants- For Training, Feasibility Studies, Community Economic Development

The U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking proposals for its Rural Business Development Grants program that will promote rural economic development and job creation projects through the awarding of grant funds. Applications will compete in two separate categories, business opportunity grants and business enterprise grants. Eligible applicants are public body/government entities, Indian Tribes, and nonprofit entities primarily serving rural areas. Rural Business Development Grant money must be used for projects that benefit rural areas or towns outside the urbanized periphery of any city with a population of 50,000 or more. There is no maximum grant amount, but smaller requests will be given higher priority. Grant funds can be used for many different things from training & technical assistance to acquisition of land, easements, capitalization of revolving loan funds, rural distance learning for job training, community economic development, feasibility studies and more. National Forest Foundation’s Matching Awards Program Round 1

The National Forest Foundation’s (NFF) Matching Awards Program (MAP) is a highly competitive grant program, focused on creating opportunities for communities, especially underserves ones, to benefit from activities on National Forest lands or nearby public lands. Projects for this grant must take place on U.S. National Forests or Grasslands, or on adjacent public lands, and demonstrate a benefit to the National Forest System lands. Eligible organizations are nonprofit organizations, Tribal governments and organizations, and universities.
