UK Hosts First Mass Timber in Appalachia Conference

Southern Foresters Applaud Passage of Critical Disaster Relief Legislation

The Southern Group of State Foresters (SGSF) expressed its support of Critical Disaster Relief legislation in a recent blog post at the end of 2024. The legislation is designed to provide disaster relief funding to states and forest landowners across the southern region to support landowners recovering from hurricanes in 2023 and 2024 as well as ongoing forest health issues like beetle outbreaks. SGSF, the National Association of State Foresters (NASF) and other partners led a coalition to champion forest disaster relief priorities in this supplemental legislation. The bill reflects two of SGSF’s top priorities: state forester-delivered timber block grants, to compensate forest landowners for lost timber value, and funding to state forestry agencies, for disaster recovery assistance. The reports are intended to help gauge future business activity. Annual AR-LA-TX Forestry Forum at LSU-Shreveport

The 39th Annual “Ark-La-Tex Forestry Forum” will be held on the campus of Louisiana State University (LSU) at the University Center in Shreveport, LA on February 18th. This full day workshop brings together private forest landowners, forestry professionals, researchers, and specialists to share up to date information on forest management in the northwest region of Louisiana and surrounding states. Key topics for this year’s forum include information on forest products and carbon markets, current issues for Ark-La-Tex forest landowners, ROW and legal issues for forest landowners, and control of Eastern Baccharis. UGA, UF & USFS Release 2024 Timber Tax Tip Factsheet

Timber tax experts from the University of Georgia (UGA), University of Florida (UF), and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) have created a comprehensive document on tax tips for forest landowedners for the 2024 tax year. The publication is an informational and educational resource for landowners and tax advisors, but not a substitute for legal advice. Topics from the publication include tax classifications for forest ownership, timber sale income and recovery of timber basis, the sale of cut or processed timber, reforestation tax incentives, excluding qualified cost-share payments, and much more. TN  State Forestry Advocates for  “Wildfire Resilience Team” to Cross-Train Structural Fire Depts

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture and Forestry (TNDOF) is proposing the creation of a 3-person wildfire resilience team that can cross-train volunteers and fire departments on how to deal with wildfires. Structural fire departments focus on protecting buildings and people using interior attack tactics, while state forestry firefighting crews specialize in wildland fire suppression, prescribed burns, and fuel management on wildlands.  Because Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), the zone of transition between unoccupied land and human development, has increased by about 2 million acres, wildfire is becoming a more prominent threat to many communities. TNDOF is advocating for additional funds in their annual budget to pay for the resilience team, who will focus on departments in the Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Crossville areas. Clemson & NCSU Research Assesses Asian Longhorn Beetle Eradication Techniques

Researchers form North Carolina State University (NCSU) and Clemson University have published a research paper, A review of non-microbial biological control strategies against the Asian longhorned beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), in Oxford Academic, an Oxford University Press academic research platform, reviewing  non-microbial biological control strategies that can be used against Asian longhorned beetles (ALB). This invasive woodboring beetle infests and damages hardwood host trees, causing significant environmental and economic damage. Several arthropod biological control agents (BCAs) have been evaluated with the goal of supporting an environmentally friendly management strategy to supplement traditional ALB management tactics. Some potential BCAs include natural predators such as arthropods like coleopteran and vertebrate predators like woodpeckers and host-specific parasitoids. Although the researchers are still a long way from developing a successful biological control program against ALB, they believe that BCAs are a worthwhile endeavor as it may act to supplement host removal to achieve eradication. Grist Magazine Article Highlights Large Increase in Wildfire Risks in Southeast & RX Burning

In a recent article, Grist Magazine highlighted the increasing risks from wildfires in the southeast, the need for more prescribed fire on the land and some of the work already being done. The article highlighted research from University of Florida which documents that the South has experienced the largest increases in wildfire nationwide. While the article discusses the backlog in prescribed burning, it also highlights active Prescribed Burn Associations (landowners & others supporting each other to burn), as well as Cultural Burn Associations, such as in the Lumbee tribe in North Carolina. Fire Weather Monitoring Tool Updated by NC State Climate Office

The Fire Weather Intelligence Portal, developed by the North Carolina State Climate Office, is a real-time monitoring tool for weather and fire danger conditions across the Southeast region that was recently updated to enhance features and usability. Users, who include landowners, fire managers and foresters, etc. will find reorganized menus, new data export options, and the addition of region-wide Fire Danger Rating Areas. Additionally, the gridded Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) was updated. KBDI is an index that assesses the risk of fire by representing the net effect of evapotranspiration and precipitation in producing cumulative moisture deficiency in deep duff and upper soil layers. The portal has been used as a tool to maintain situational awareness, track wildfire risk in their lands and regions, and inform prescribed burn plans. The Wildlife Society & Journal of Wildlife Mgmt Special Issue Highlights Indigenous Wildlife Management in North America

In summer 2024, The Wildlife Society and The Journal of Wildlife Management (JWM)   partnered to launch a special issue titled: “Indigenous Wildlife Management in North America.” This issue features articles that focus on tribally driven research, management activities, and Indigenous knowledge as well as  the ways that Tribal entities are working on wildlife conservation and management on and off Tribal lands. An editorial which introduces the issue and is co-written by University of Georgia (UGA) Wildlife Extension Professor, provides context to the sheer scope of land managed by indigenous communities in the United States and Canada, an overview of the different types of indigenous communities found in North America, the importance of traditional ecological knowledge and highlights challenges in publishing indigenous knowledge. CSU Releases Report Detailing Forest Over Time in Colorado

Colorado State University (CSU) recently released a report titled  “Colorado Forest Carbon Inventory: Forest Ecosystem and Harvested Wood Product Carbon Accounting Framework Through 2019.” The Colorado General Assembly directed the Colorado State Forest Service to develop a statewide forest carbon accounting inventory framework. One of the goals of the report was to enable this framework to be shared with other states more easily and to make it easier to enable future updates for monitoring and reporting. The framework provides detailed estimates of the carbon captured, stored, and released by Colorado’s forests as well as carbon stocks in harvested wood products. While these forests hold a substantial amount of carbon, during the reporting period (2002 to 2019), it was found that each year Colorado’s forests have released more carbon than they have sequestered due to widespread tree mortality. New Report Details Cross-Laminated Timber Market Potential & Trends Globally

According to a report published by Allied Market Research, a global company that provides market research and business consulting services, the global market for mass timber is estimated to reach $3.7 billion by 2032. This growth is being driven by the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific building construction industries, as developers see the environmental and economic benefits of using mass timber. According to this article by World Economic Forum, fully matured mass timber ecosystem helps regional stakeholders in five key ways: (1) cost savings, (2) sustainable development through renewable materials and carbon sequestration, (3) regional economic development, (4) local forest management and conservation, and (5) national security and supply chain de-risking. While hyperlocal mass timber ecosystems are already being developed in other parts of the world, there is growth in many other regions to satisfy the growing demand for sustainable construction products. Call for Abstracts for the Biennial North American Agroforestry Conference

The Association for Temperate Agroforestry (AFTA) convenes the North American Agroforestry Conference (NAAC) biennially to bring together an inter-regional and international community of agroforestry professionals, and to enrich participants understanding of research and development outcomes within temperate agroforestry systems. This year, the Center for Agroforestry at the University of Missouri will host the conference from July 23-25. The Conference is seeking abstract submissions for a poster, oral presentation (20 minutes), lightning talk (5 minutes), or an organized session (60 minutes). The submission deadline is February 25. SAF Launches New Certification for Certified Forestry Technicians

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) has announced they are now accepting applications for their newest professional certification program Certified Forestry Technician (CFT). There are three pathways for eligibility: (1) two years of related forestry experience accompanied by an SAF Accredited degree at an Associate’s level or higher, (2) non-SAF related degree at an Associate's level or higher with three years of related forestry experience, (3) or unrelated or no degree pathway with four years of related forestry experience. The Candidate CFT certificate is also available for those who do not meet the experience requirement. As part of SAF’s certification program, these certifications will promote excellence in forest stewardship, provide a trusted credential for employers, stakeholders, colleagues, and the public, enhance the forestry profession's credibility across diverse landscapes and communities, and set a recognized standard of excellence for professionals demonstrating knowledge, experience, and dedication. The CWDG helps communities in the wildland urban interface (WUI) implement the three goals of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy (Cohesive Strategy): restore and maintain landscapes, create fire adapted communities, and improve wildfire response. Climate Smart Communities Initiatives Community Resilience Grant

Climate Smart Communities Initiatives (CSCI) is currently accepting applications for grants to advance community-based climate resilience efforts. The applicants must be a community-based organization and a local, regional, or Tribal government entity. The funds can be used for a range of activities depending on the needs of the community, including climate vulnerability and risk analyses, planning processes, community engagement, project prioritization, and/or the implementation of projects. Each grant will cover a 12-month period, and include approximately $100,000 in funding as well as access to training opportunities, technical experts, and cohort support. Rural Business Development Grants- For Training, Feasibility Studies, Community Economic Development

The U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking proposals for its Rural Business Development Grants program that will promote rural economic development and job creation projects through the awarding of grant funds. Applications will compete in two separate categories, business opportunity grants and business enterprise grants. Eligible applicants are public body/government entities, Indian Tribes, and nonprofit entities primarily serving rural areas. Rural Business Development Grant money must be used for projects that benefit rural areas or towns outside the urbanized periphery of any city with a population of 50,000 or more. There is no maximum grant amount, but smaller requests will be given higher priority. Grant funds can be used for many different things from training & technical assistance to acquisition of land, easements, capitalization of revolving loan funds, rural distance learning for job training, community economic development, feasibility studies and more. US Endowment Announces RFP Beginning January 2025 for Round Two of its Impact Investing Program

The U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities will conduct a second round of its Impact Investing Program early next year. A request for proposals (RFP) will be released in January 2025 with up to $6.5 million available for projects that generate financial returns while enhancing forest health, supporting forest-reliant communities, and expanding sustainable forest markets. The program focuses on three primary areas: (1) working forests, (2) rural forest-reliant communities, and (3) industry processes and products.
