Children's Activity Book "Living on the Wild Side...Responsibly" Published
Gwen Beavens of the USDA Forest Service, along with illustrator Jack Elrod, has published a children's activity book titled "Living on the Wild Side...Responsibly: An Activity Book about Living Near Woodlands" through the USDA. This book is about the responsibilities, risks, and rewards of living where wildlands and urban environments meet, the area land managers refer to as the Wildland Urban Interface. It is designed for students in the third-sixth grades.
This activity book was designed with the input of many teachers and students so that it is worth-while, fun, self-contained (with options for expanding lessons), and meets all or part of the most current National Achievement Standards and skills listed on pages 5-7.
This book can be completed in a classroom, a home, an academic or non-academic environment. If used for teaching, this book can be used as a unit of social studies, mathematics, environmental stewardship, or conservation. The entire book can be completed in about two hours, or it can be divided into 4 half-hour session focusing specifically on the introduction and overall book concepts: wildfire, wildlife, and water quality.
