Clemson to Host White Nose Syndrome Webinar
A White Nose Syndrome (WNS) webinar will be conducted by Clemson University and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) on August 3, 2010 for SCDNR and other wildlife professionals. The purpose of the seminar is inform professionals on the appropriate responses related to unusual bat behavior or dead and dying bats...
WNS affects “cave” or colonial bats including big brown, little brown, Northern long-eared, small-footed, southeastern, tri-colored [aka eastern pipistrelle], and Rafinesque’s big-eared bats. It is possible that the fungus associated with WNS, Geomyces destructans, may spread to other bat species. A general overview of WNS will be provided, followed by techniques for bat identification and Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS) sample submission guidelines, disinfection protocols, and when it is appropriate to collect and submit samples. The webinar will start at 1:30 p.m. and can be viewed by logging on to the provided link. The webinar will also be archived for viewing at a later date for those who are interested.
