This report was created to document the key findings and recommendations that resulted from the first “Forest Economic Contributions Summit: Strategies for Development, Communications & Education on the Sector's Role in the Region” held in New Orleans, LA in March 2020. The goal of the summit was to bring together forestry professionals with a variety of positions, forestry communication specialists and economic development professionals and provide opportunities for the attendees to learn from the presenters and each other. More than 60 people representing 12/13 of southern region states and a mixture of state forestry agencies, Cooperative Extension, state forest landowner associations, as well as the United States Forest Service and nationwide organizations participated in the presentations and small group discussions. Summit outcomes were centered around three areas that best represent the key discussions: forestry economic development, forestry economic messaging, and forestry economic data. Faculty and staff from six different state forestry agencies, two universities, and SREF assisted with the organization of this report. Funding for this project was provided by the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
