Extensive digitized U.S. Forest Service photo collection now available
The Forest History Society and the Eastern Region (Region 9) of the USDA Forest Service wish to announce the online availablity of more than 6,000 Forest Service photographs – the largest number of searchable historic Forest Service images on the Web. The image database is searchable on the FHS website at: http://fhsnb.oit.duke.edu/dbtw-wpd/textbase/WebQuery.htm
The Eastern Region Historical Photograph Collection (which represents only part of the larger national Forest Service image collection) has been incorporated into the Forest History Society’s existing online image database, bringing its total number of searchable images to more than 10,000.
The images in this impressive collection date from the 1880s through the 1970s (with the bulk from the 1930s-1960s) and document land and resource management activities in the National Forests, primarily in the Midwestern states, but also covering areas of the South and Northeast. Subjects include fire prevention, detection, and suppression; outdoor recreation; timber management; wildlife and nature scenes; Forest Service facilities; Native Americans; and programs of both the Job Corps and the Civilian Conservation Corps. The original prints and negatives have been transferred to the National Archives & Records Administration - Great Lakes Regional Archives in Chicago.
