Florida Forester Recognized by National Organization

P. K. Nair, a distinguished professor at the University of Floridas School of Forest Resources and Conservation, will receive the Society  of American Foresters Barrington Moore Memorial Award. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in biological research leading to the advancement of forestry.

Nair is often cited as the worlds leader in the field of agroforestry-a recognition based on his world-renowned research efforts as well as his role in defining the direction of agroforestry research.

"Not only is Dr. Nair an internationally acknowledged leader in agroforestry, he is largely responsible for its development as a scientific discipline through applying agronomy concepts and practices to forestry," says Ann Camp, chair of the SAF Science and Technology Board, the body that reviews nominations and makes recommendations for the Barrington Moore Memorial Award. "Because of his work, developing countries no longer need make the difficult choice between growing food or growing fiber. Under agroforestry systems, both can be accomplished on the same piece of ground."

Nairs work as editor of Agroforestry Systems has led to greater recognition of the science throughout the world, and his textbook, An Introduction to Agroforestry, has become the basis for all college-level study of the subject. As a result, there is seldom a conference, meeting, or joint writing venture on the subject that does not seek his involvement. A popular and effective teacher, Nair brings a wealth of knowledge to the classroom; his students appreciate not only his knowledge but also his willingness to guide them through the publication process and the establishment of their agroforestry careers. Nairs accomplishments in the field of agroforestry are unsurpassed, and his excellence as an editor, researcher, and teacher are a boon for the discipline as well as the forestry profession.

The Barrington Moore Memorial Award is one of eight national awards announced by SAF. The winners will be recognized at a special ceremony held during a joint meeting being between SAF and the Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada. The meeting will be held October 2-6 in Edmonton, Alberta.

The award winners are nominated and approved by their professional peers. SAFs Forest Science and Technology Board or the Committee on Professional Recognition review the nominations then forward their recommendations to the SAF Council, the organizations governing body, for its review and approval. The rigorous review process produces candidates with a national profile and a comprehensive history of  sustained contributions to the forestry profession and service to the public.
