North Carolina State University Extension Forestry has recently developed a research-based educational initiative entitled "NC Woody Biomass: Natures Renewable Energy!"

The program’s goal is to provide education and materials that promote economic opportunities related to renewable energy derived from woody biomass. The program provides:

  • assistance to utilities, industries and others interested in using wood as a fuel source.
  • educational programs for natural resource professionals, landowners, and others.
  • ongoing forums on bioenergy and other forms of alternative energy for the larger community.
  • The NC Woody Biomass web site is a portal to information related to woody biomass and biomass energy. The site is designed to provide information for a wide range of user to include natural resource professionals, extension professionals, community planning and development professionals, policy makers, enviromental leaders, landowners, and the local public. The portal includes publications, additional links, and educational opportunities.  www.ces.ncsu.edu/forestry/biomass.html
  • educational materials addressing the various facets of renewable energy and woody biomass.

Efforts in 2008 have been directed towards utilities, industries, natural resource professionals, policy makers, environmental leaders, landowners and others and have resulted in the following.

  • Resource analyses for major utilities, private industries and a university in their efforts to utilize wood as a renewable energy source. Seven analyses were completed.
  • Reached about 1000 participants through proven methods of technology transfer that includes conferences, professional workshops and teleconference, landowner programs, and a webinar for cooperative extension professionals. Eleven different events were held.
  • Provided over 1400 continuing education credits for resource professionals.
  • Increased professionals understanding by about 20% and landowners understanding by about 88% of the economic opportunities related to renewable energy derived from woody biomass.
  • A series of factsheets on woody biomass and renewable energy.  Currently nine factsheets are available online at www.ces.ncsu.edu/forestry/biomass.html.
  • The Biomass South 2008 conference proceedings, available online at http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/nreos/forest/feop/biomass-south/proceedings/index.html.

Future efforts are focusing on exploring prospects for existing forest industries to improve profitability under the RPS and/or NCGreenPower and the promotion of economic development through education of local decision makers.
