New Research Associate to Focus on Biomass Issues in the South

The University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forest Resources recently hired Dr. Daniel Cassidy as a post-doctoral research associate. Daniel will fill the role as project coordinator for UGA’s portion of the Sustainable Forestry for Bioenergy and Bio-based Products Initiative. His responsibilities will consist of constructing educational modules based on the latest research in the field, as well as assisting in building a comprehensive biomass encyclopedia and promoting the system as a management objective for landowners. In addition to his biomass work, Daniel is also increasing the presence and impact of the national Forestry BMP website (http://forestrybmp.net).

Dr. Cassidy comes to UGA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville where he completed his Ph.D. under the guidance of state forestry extension specialist Dr. Wayne Clatterbuck, focusing on the historical development and dynamics of shortleaf pine in east Tennessee. His Master’s studies at UT examined the utilization of internet technologies and natural resource education. While at UT Daniel worked closely with the extension service educational programs and authored the Tennessee Southern Pine Beetle website. As an undergraduate at Mississippi State, Daniel served as a co-operative education student with Champion International in north Mississippi, north-central Alabama, and southern Tennessee.

A native of West Virginia, Daniel’s research interests are in pine and mixed hardwood stand development, dendrochronology, intensive pine management and oak regeneration. An avid golfer, he enjoys traveling, hiking and following the Mississippi State Bulldog athletic teams with his wife, Laura, and son, Mic. They look forward to making Athens home for some time.
