Sustainable Wood Housing Specialist Joins NCSU
Dr. David Tilotta will provide assistance to better utilize wood and wood-based composites in residential construction
David Tilotta joined North Carolina State University as an extension specialist in the area of Sustainable Wood Housing and Construction. David will add greatly to the wood products extension effort by educating builders, architects, etc which will reduce the number of maintenance problems associated with poor construction techniques, and will benefit North Carolina wood products producers by developing the knowledge of the wood-using public who are their potential customers. David has an academic background in environmental chemistry, restores and remodels old homes as a hobby, and serves as the President of the Coalition for Advanced Housing and Forest Products Research (CA HFPR). The Coalition consists of various universities and the USDA Forest Products Laboratory working together to develop and evaluate new technology, wood products, and construction methods to better utilize wood and wood based composites in residential construction.
One of the projects that David will be working on will be the Sustainable Wood House, which will be a showcase demonstration site, and teaching and research center that highlights the environmental advantages of using wood as a construction material, proper construction techniques, and new products. We have already received a grant of $79,500 from a foundation to start the project.
