We are pleased to announce that the University of Tennessee's Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries (FWF) has a new Extension team member, Dr. Sharon Jean-Philippe. Dr. Jean-Philippe was hired by the University of Tennessee on July 1, 2010, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries, with a 75% teaching – 25% research appointment. As of July 1, 2016, she was granted tenure in FWF, and promoted to Associate Professor. Along with her tenure and promotion came a restructuring of her appointment. Dr. Jean-Philippe is now 70% teaching, 30% Extension.

Dr. Jean-Philippe has successfully led the development and approval of FWF's Forestry curriculum concentration in "Urban Forestry" (the concentration became official beginning in the fall of 2012). Her teaching-related duties for this concentration have gradually shifted from curriculum development to instruction and recruiting. She has also contributed to FWF teaching programs via guest lectures, team-teaching graduate seminar courses, and leading undergraduate First Year Seminars.

Dr. Jean Philippe is now ready to apply her substantial teaching skills to a new audience, the citizens of Tennessee. Her new Extension appointment will allow her to work with Extension agents and specialists, as well as directly with all Tennesseans, to help them with their urban forest needs. She has a wealth of knowledge from her applied research program that can help us maintain and improve our urban and community forest resource.

Dr. Jean-Philippe is a member, and serves as secretary of the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council (TUFC). TUFC promotes healthy and sustainable urban and community forests which contribute to clean air and water, economic stability, and beautiful green places in which all Tennesseans and future generations will live, work and play. We at SREF welcome Dr. Jean-Philippe to Extension and we look forward to working with her!
