USDA FS R&D Deputy Chief to retire
Dr. Robert Lewis to leave post in January, 2004.
After 34 years in the Forest Service, I have decided to retire in my 7th year as Deputy Chief for Research and Development. I plan to retire on January 2, 2004. I came to Washington as Deputy Chief on April 28, 1997. I have commuted daily from my residence in Pennsylvania to my office in Washington, DC since 1997, about 250 miles round trip. When I leave on January 2, I will have commuted a total of about 378,000 miles to serve as Deputy Chief for Research. The privilege to serve was worth every mile.
Thank you for your support and the collaboration during my tenure. Together, we have accomplished quite a lot over these 7 years. My career started as a GS-4, Biological Lab Technician at Stoneville, MS in January 1970. As you can imagine, I have lots of people to thank for a wonderful career and wonderful opportunities.
I am delighted to leave this position in the good hands of my successor, who will be named shortly. Also, I am very happy that Dale and Sally gave me an opportunity to help them in the selection process.
There are several important Research and Development business items I will attend to before leaving in January. One will be a series of meetings/conversations with my successor. I will help make this a smooth and happy transition.
Best wishes to all.
Robert Lewis, Jr.
Deputy Chief for Research & Development
