Virginia Tech Announces On-line Non-Credit Course
Virginia Tech is offering an on-line "Woodland Options for Landowners" beginning March 10, 2008.
On-line registration opened Jan. 21 at www.cnr.vt.edu/forestupdate and the cost is $70, which includes materials.
The course is open to all southeastern forest landowners but specifically geared towards Virginia forest landowners. This 12-week self-paced non-credit course introduces landowners to topics such as aerial photography, topographic maps, soil surveys, setting forest management objectives, forest ecology, and silviculture.
There are two levels of participation. The basic level is for those students who do not have access to their forest land on a regular basis; the advanced level is for those who do. In the advanced level, students will be asked to visit their property and conduct activities such as tree identification, and land use history evaluations.
Natural resource professionals and experienced landowners will serve as mentors for the students. Interactive discussion boards will be used to facilitate communication among students and mentors.
