Virginia Tech offers Online Woodland Management Course

Virginia Tech, in cooperation with NC State University, will be offering the award-winning Woodland Options for Landowners online course this spring.

Woodland Options is a 10-week course designed to familiarize landowners with basic woodland management concepts and help them develop management objectives for their property. Participants will work locally with a group of “mentors” composed of experienced landowners and resource professionals who will help guide them as questions about forest management arise.  While the course is designed for landowners with little or no experience in managing their forestland, anyone with an interest in woodland management may find the course useful.

Woodland Options for Landowners is comprised of six modules:  1) Vision, Goals and Family Resources; 2) Stewardship and Sustainability; 3) Property Deeds and Boundary Lines; 4) Maps, Photos, and Soil Surveys; 5) Forest Ecology and Management; and 6) Assistance, Planning and Options.  Within each module, participants will complete a basic assignment which will be composed of material available entirely online.  Additionally, landowners are encouraged to complete an advanced assignment if they are able to visit their property.  The advanced assignments will involve hands-on activities such as boundary line identification, tree identification, and forest stand mapping.

The course will begin on February 2, 2004.  The cost for the course is $60, and students should register by January 30, 2004.  To register or view a syllabus of the course, visit the Virginia Tech Online website, www.vto.vt.edu or the Virginia Forest Landowner Update website, www.cnr.vt.edu/forestupdate.  For more information, contact Shawn Baker, course instructor, at 540/231-6391 or via email at forester@vt.edu.
