Meet at 8:30 a.m. at The University of Virginia’s College
at Wise in the overflow lot at the end of Stadium Drive.
One College Ave, Wise VA 24293
Tour begins promptly at 9:00 a.m.
Join us in beautiful southwest Virginia to learn about a
variety of practices used to remediate former coal mining
areas. We will also learn about using fire for management.
Stop 1. UVA’s College at Wise - See abandoned mine land
that was restored to a productive forest of native hardwoods
and American chestnut. Learn about American chestnut
restoration research efforts.
Stop 2. Powell River Project - View years of mine land
reforestation and research projects.
Lunch at the Powell River Project.
Stop 3. Powell River Project Cont. - Examine a FireWise
project and discuss the merits of prescribed burning in
hardwood forests. Learn about the potential of growing
hybrid poplar for biomass production and see recent
plantings of these fast-growing trees.
Return by 4:30 p.m.
