This year the focus is on below ground  issues with urban trees and the agenda is filled with nationally known researchers and speakers that will cover everything you need to know about tree roots and urban soils. The Field Day on Friday, where you can see many of the topics covered on Thursday being demonstrated in practice.

James Urban will be discussing the principles of site design for urban trees, as well as presenting over 25 years of research and in field results of the use of structural soils. He specializes in the design of trees and soils in urban spaces. James has written and lectured extensively on this subject and has been responsible for the introduction of many urban tree planting and soil  innovations. His book Up By Roots, is one of the principal tree and soil references for arborists.

Dr. Christopher Luley will be talking about the myths of root rot, its causal agents and the different methods of remediation. He will also be joining us for  the field day portion, where you can see the diagnosis process in action.  He specializes in urban forest and pest management, and diagnosis of wood decay in urban trees. Dr. Luley has over 50 technical publications on urban tree topics and three books in publication.

Dr. Susan Day, from Virginia Tech, will be presenting on ‘compacted urban soil syndrome’ and her new research on soil rehabilitation. Dr. Day′s research focuses on root-soil interactions in urban systems and their role in the sustainability of urban ecosystems. Her work with the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES®) since its inception shaped the soils standards now institutionalized by the US Green Building Council and adopted as a sustainability standard by the U.S. federal government executive branch.
