The Southeast Partnership for Integrated Biomass Supply System (IBSS) goals are to demonstrate real-world solutions towards economically and environmentally sustainable production and conversion of biomass-to-biofuels in the Southeastern United States. This project, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, includes three Universities (Auburn, University of Tennessee and North Carolina State University), private industry (ArborGen and Ceres), as well as staff from Southern Regional Extension Forestry (SREF). Southern Regional Extension Forester Bill Hubbard was included in the project to assist with the Extension, Education and Outreach (E2O) team.

This project includes all aspects of the biofuels industry, from growth of biofuel feedstocks to conversion (biomass-to-biofuels), and creation of the workforce to support the industry. The project is divided into five teams: Crop development, Feedstock production and logistics, Metrics and modeling, Conversion and E2O. SREF staff work with the E2O group under the overall goal of creating and providing accurate and regionally specific information on the entire biomass-to-biofuels production process and working on developing a trained workforce for a biofuels industry. Feedstocks for this project include switchgrass, sorghum, and woody biomass among others that are being explored. SREF staff are focused on forestry extension, but working together with other E2O members to promote biofuels overall.
